Attracting Minorities to Geosciences Through Involved Digital Story Telling
Field Trip
The Nome team had several different field trips. Additional photos of filed trips are posted in the photo gallery section of the website.

Trip to Ester mine, Ester, AK

The first was the trip for the staff and native elder to visit the mining area in Ester during the Fairbanks geoscience workshop.

Trip to Rock Creek Mine, Nome, AK

The second and most important was the field trip for the children to the Rock Creek Mine in Nome. The students were spilt in three different groups and each group was scheduled to visit the mine on a different date. Two groups successfully completed their trip. The day the third group was scheduled for the filed trip, the mine announced a closure of its operations in Nome. This unfortunate closure had severe impacts in the community, potentially dislocating many families.

Trip to lake behind the school, Nome, AK

The third trip was to a frozen lake close to the school premises. Children observed how bubbles get trapped in lake ice. They walked on the lake ice and watched methane burn as it escaped from a bubble in a frozen lake when they broke open the bubble during their trip.
