The study is conducted in Johns Hopkins Inlet, which is located at the terminus of the Johns Hopkins glacier in the upper West Arm of Glacier Bay National Park in the southeastern Alaska. Johns Hopkins Inlet is approximately 9 miles long and about 1 mile wide and hosts the largest aggregation of harbor seals in Glacier Bay (Mathews & Pendleton 2006). The Johns Hopkins glacier and the Gilman glacier form a single advancing ice front, representing one of the few glaciers in southeastern Alaska that is actively advancing. After undergoing a retreat that began at the end of the 19th century, the Johns Hopkins Glacier has advanced nearly 2 km since the mid-20th century, and is one of a small number of advancing tidewater glaciers in the region.
